Richard is so helpful and really knows not just gems but the jewelry business. I am so glad I got off the beaten path (he's not a regular window-level shop but has an office in downtown Decatur in an office building) and went to him. I brought in three pieces that I had also taken to Worthmore (one that I wanted to sell, one to size, and one to appraise). Worthmore had written off the piece I wanted to appraise (to insure) as not being worth it, priced the ring sizing at $150, more than I thought reasonable, and taken little interest in advising me on selling the 3rd piece. Richard took time to review all the pieces. He found maker marks on the piece I had wanted to appriase that the other shop had not seen that indicated its high value and looked into it's worth before advising on whether to get a formal appraisal or not (it turned out to be worth it). He did a beautiful job on the appraisal and did it there quickly on the spot. He advised on options for selling another piece, what I should aim to get, what it was worth, etc., and made me feel empowered to make good decisions moving forward. For the ring sizing, he called his network, advised on pricing, and made some great recommendations on where to go. After over an hour in his office, learning a ton about the pieces, the business, the stones, etc., he charged only for the basic cost of the printed appraisal I needed for insurance. It was a great experience and I highly recommend taking the time to go to AJI!
