I simply love the league. It truly is a treasure. Just walking the halls and looking at students and teachers working is just inspiring. I am taking a drawing workshop with Ephraim Rubenstein and I have learned so much! He is a great art teacher and I truly feel blessed to be in his class. I want to be there as often as possible! Just being around so many artists is so awesome!!!!
It's a wonderful place for anyone interested in exploring and improving their artistic abilities, with terrific instructors and mentors and a warm and inviting atmosphere. I'm so glad I found it.
I was introduced to the League by my mother who is also an artist. The League has offered me a chance to find a mentor in my teacher Sherry Camhy who has pushed me artistically and creatively, and has always encouraged me to be me. I continue to study at ASL with Sherry Camhy and other teachers such as Frank Porcu who are talented and insightful.
My experience with the Art Students League of New York began with Sherry Camhy. Sherry was a drawing teacher of mine at The School Of Visual Arts. She became a mentor of mine when I graduated and introduced me to the League where I have done some teaching and workshops. Sherry has built an amazing community of students around her classes. Even when she has rooms full of students she manages to work with and help everyone as the best teachers do. She recognizes each student's strengths and works with them to develop their skill set. There is something truly unique about a Sherry Camhy class. To me, she is the Art Students League. Its nice to know that institutions like the ASL afford people of all backgrounds and ages to take classes with teachers like Sherry.
I love this place!!!! It’s is one of the greatest and most important and vital institutions in this country.
I’m so proud to be a member and so very proud to have my portrait of my father, BLACKLIST: portrait of John Garfield, receive a red dot!!!!! Th painting was exhibited in the Sherry Camhy concours show!
She is a truly great teacher and has taught me so much. Anyone would be lucky to learn from her.
I love the League! It's the best thing in New York City. It offers an amazing range of courses at a really good price, and is totally unpretentious, inclusive and supportive of all, no matter how experienced you are. I cannot recommend it highly enough. I have to leave NYC soon, and I'm despairing - I can't find anything to replace it. Join! Take classes! It will make you happy.
I️ recommend the ASL to every person I️ meet that expresses an interest in learning more about creating art. Whether novice or advanced, young or old, recreational or professional. My drawing and painting skills were brought to a totally different level after studying at the league. Between the rich history, and the high quality of the instructors, I️ really don’t see a better option in NY for Artists looking to improve.
Sheesh! Can't seem to finish my comment before the page punks out and I gotta start over ! Anyway, finishing by saying how as an actor... besides my personal inordinate sensual satisfaction as I waltz along your walls immersed in the canvasses and sculptures I leave after my visit fully loaded for what I do in the world of theatre. Oh, and I love the talks there and... just unassumingly and invisibly studying the faces and motions of "everybody ASL" from artists to staff. May I say O! M! G!
Thank you Sherry!
From the Sherry Camhy class at the Met and Central Park I learned how to visit a museum and actually look at the art. I drew a Frederick Remington horse, a Pissarro harvest, African masks, Rodin's 'clenching fist", a Norwegian very dark moonlit seascape or Homer's stormy sea to name a few that I can visualize. Most I would have glanced at but not really seen, nor remembered.
I also learned that I could wander into the park at 1pm and work with a time limitation, knowing I had a presentation and discussion with a group at 4pm at a table in the cafeteria!.
Each student's sketch was looked at in a historical and personal context. Comments ranged from materials and techniques ( from ball point pen to ipad ) to emotional and psychological content.
The concours exhibit pulled the work together and I found myself and others seriously looking at the art and talking, especially during the closing party.
The class was a wonderful experience, necessary for my personal development!
This place is a rare and valued gem. I love the people who instruct and attend sessions here. There is a real sense of community and a love for the visual arts that is unparalleled. I highly recommend The Art Students League to anyone, at any level, who wants to work on their art.
