Katherine and her staff were knowledgeable, friendly, and really pushed the class to get the most out of the material. I was a bartender years ago, and loved it and missed it, so I'm really glad I took the course. You can't do better for the money, the great staff, or the fun time you'll have taking this class. From the first moment I walked in (knowing very little about the industry) until the moment I walked out with my certificate, I was learning and ENJOYING IT! Katherine doesn't just teach us a bunch of drinks, she gets us ready for the job! It was a lot like on the job training but with vital and varied industry information included. I highly recommend this course to anyone considering bartending or any peripheral occupation.
Katherine is a fantastic teacher. She gives you all the tools, knowledge and help to succeed. She let me come in early everyday to get extra practice in and was available to answer any questions. She makes the class fun while you learn. And through her job tip emails I landed a job that I'm having fun doing. I've been told by people that I'm the happiest they've ever seen me. And I thank Katherine for giving me the knowledge and opportunity to succeed.
I took this class before taking a job as a first time bartender. I am happy to say that the 2 weeks spent taking this course was very well spent. The school accurately represents what you can expect wherever you may work. The instructor and owner is a wealth of knowledge and so friendly. I will make the tuition for this back in 5 to 7 days at my new job not even including my hourly rate. Do yourself a favor and invest the time to give yourself an invaluable tool that has the potential to make great money part or fulltime. If you've ever considered becoming a bartender do It! But first go to the Portland Drink Lab Academy you won't regret it.
I recently moved up to Oregon from South California, I decided to expand my hospitality experience with the knowledge of bartending. I discovered this place by looking online and comparing my choices. It was two weeks of knowledge galore, but it never felt like a strain. The class was a blast! met a few cool people and walked out with more knowledge than I could ever hope for. I highly recommend his class to anyone who has a want to learn in a fast , fun and incredibly immersive environment. Thank you to K! She made me appreciate the bartending world and the respect that it deserves.
Tuition is cheap for the kind of class you take. After passing this course, I am absolutely astounded that you don't have to have a certificate to become a bartender with how much knowledge you learn here. You learn from over 90 drink recipes, how to pour properly, terminology of the craft to the distilling processes behind alcohols and how to present satisfactory customer service. I walked away with a certificate in my hand, a recommendation letter and knowledge beyond what i expected. I can honestly say this two week course equipted me with skills most bartenders do not have after years of experience. If you think this course is easy, it's not. It took a whole lot of studying to graduate but it was worth it. You will have fun. You will learn a lot. And you will walk away with a trade in your hand. Seriously could not have had a better experience. A++++
I highly highly recommend going to Portland Drink Lab Academy if you are serious about bartending, or simply want to have the right knowledge thrown at you. Katherine will definitely give you this, plus more. Katherine was literally the best instructor, and gave you much knowledge on the actual craft, but the basis of learning how to make these many drinks was delivered with much experience and history of actual working ways behind the real bar, and what you can expect. What you can definitely expect is learning the many various types of mixed drinks, and trust me, if you put in the time, you will be able to have them memorized by the time you finish up. What definitely helps with this way of learning, is that you are visually seeing Katherine making these drinks in front of you, which helps you get an idea of what yours should look like. This visuals paired with the very well written text plus your many times of practice, will nail each and every one of these recipes in your head. Aside from the actual knowledge that you will, and I emphasize WILL learn if you actually put in the right time to study and practice, was Katherine. I can honestly say she is an amazing instructor, and what made the whole experience so enjoyable was you knew what to expect, she held herself to an amazing accountability level, which made it impossible not hold yourself to the same standard. I really applaud this woman and I highly recommend this school for anyone, but I'm serious, put in the time and you will be in awe of what you get out of this.
This establishment is WAY informative and a most excellent place to learn the art of Mixology and the hospitality industry. I participated and completed the course, and Katherine is an impeccable teacher. It’s a positive, uplifting, and fun educational experience. I highly recommend the Portland Drink Lab Acacemy to anyone looking to become a bartender and beyond!!!
This is a gift that keeps on giving. I graduated July 2017 and since then this experience has landed me a couple jobs. Not to mention the continued support that goes to the graduates is invaluable and just landed me an amazing job. You can not over value the ability to walk into a job with excellent baseline experience. Worth every penny.
What a great experience! Our instructor, Chivon, is highly informative, experienced, and committed to her students' success. The school director, Katherine, has really honed in on what being a successful bartender and mixologist takes. I highly recommend the Portland Drink Lab Academy. Attend to start or boost a career behind the bar. Attend to scratch that itch of learning a fun trade. Attend to have a backup set of highly applicable skills.
